Food for thought

hi folks,
as i said earlier i had dedicated this space for not only book reviews but warm, innovative discussions and debates on various important issues.
Inferno is coming soon............but hold on, before that, i just request you all to just think about a particular issue, OVERPOPULATION.what are your views about it? you must be wondering why i am asking you to do this just out of the blue.well, i give you a wee hint; it has a pretty strong bond with Inferno.

So what to do thinkers believe? is it something that could be used in advantage, say develop more labor intensive production techniques and ultimately say through trade make the nation prosperous? or is it a menace that pressurizes on the resources of Mother Earth resulting in more hunger, deprivation and chaos?

Just be apolitical and go beyond any religious or cultural beliefs; think of it as a socio-economic problem. think from different viewpoints, put your feet in others shoes and think.
happy thinking
see you soon
coming back with INFERNO........................

The Lowland

hiya there,
ahoy folks,
did you like P.S. I Love You ?it's one of my personal favorites. Today as i promised earlier i would love to talk about Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland.my hand shakes literally as i write half telling myself to stop for daring to write about something which is created by a master creator, Jhumpa Lahiri. The lowland speaks of love, brotherhood, passion and the tremendous journey called life.
The novel speaks of Subhash and Udayan, two brothers born and brought up in tollygunge, Calcutta,India.hailing from middle class families.the brothers, although share a deep rooted connection, but are exactly opposite in nature. udayan is more like a risk lover, pampered by his parents and elder brother subhash, he has a true revolutionary spirit. udayan wants to work for the greater good, with great ideals he lands headway into the naxalite movement. the name naxal comes from the name of the village naxalvadi in west bengal where the movement had its origin.but not before subhash and udayan had passed school with flying colours; the brothers obtaining degrees from prestigious institutions-subhash from jadavpur university and udayan from presidency college.as udayan gets more and more involved in the movement which slowly became more violent, subhash leaves for rhode island for his doctorate.the story paces up with the entry of Gauri.a student of philosophy, gauri too believes the charismatic udayan only to fall in his love.the duo marry and dream together of a better world free from exploitation and corruption.as gauri studies, udayan teaches in a local school and all seems well.but the blissful happiness was shortlived as udayan was shot dead by the police near the lowland. subhash comes back to calcutta only to realize that his parents specially his mother bijoli could no longer love him without his brother.he furthers gets to know that gauri is pregnant. inspite of much oppositions from his family, subhash falling in love with gauri, marries her and takes her back to U.S. with himself.the relationship of gauri and subhash is extremely complex and ultimately the only bond between them is udayan and gauri's daughter bela. gauri resumes her classes of philosophy in a local university and finds her solace in her studies while subhash finds his in little bela. unable to forget the undying, unflinching love for udayan, the tormented, sad gauri cannot love her daughter in a true motherly way.she deserts her child only to be never forgiven by bela.
As the story continues we see the fates of the characters like subhash, udayan, bijoli, bela and gauri.the novel is written in such a manner that it strikes us,shocks us,enlightens us as well as shows us the varied complexity of the journey of life.important historical events pertaining to calcutta, west bengal as well as of the world are woven so finely into the story that the reader gets lost in its depths.it seeks to question the very human nature,it talks of it's unpredictability.although the focus or the limelight is on the brothers family but the readers gets to see the entire world surrounding them as well as catch a glimpse of the history of that time.my friend the experience of reading the book was unparalleled. The Lowland is a poignant tale of shattered lives as well as happy lives, sacrifices, pains and lost love;a tale that promises to haunt its readers long past he turns the last page;as if the spectre of udayan watches over.it is a tale of two places, two nations, of lives torn apart mostly due to their own decisions;a tale where guilt milks the vision of life and destroys its delicate balance,of love that goes far beyond the grave and love's undying true fragrances.
this is a must read for all readers;come give yourself up to the masterful style of jhumpa lahiri, take a deep breath and dive headlong into the lowland and just forget everything.you will leave refreshed and enriched.
and don't forget your mug of hot coffee............
do tell me if you have any questions or just want to hear more about The Lowland and i will be back soon.......................

Connection................

hiya folks,
its been only a couple of days yet i feel a deep connection with you all reading my posts.i think that there are unending possibilities.new ideas fresh as their thinkers are going to emerge.this reading space will be loved and cherished by all who read for the love of reading, the unique and unparalleled pleasure and friendship with inanimate books which becomes alive with the readers midas touch.even if one person becomes interested in reading something after going through my posts i will feel successful.so do tell me what you feel and think.  i will soon be back with Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland.

P.S. I Love You

hiya folks,
i will talk about jhumpa lahiri's the lowland but before that lets talk about something called love.now what do you guys think love is? a complex chemical reaction of the brain or some mechanisms yet unexplained of the heart?whatever it is i think it makes or breaks our lives.isn't it?
in this context comes Cecelia Ahern's novel P.S. I Love You. it was first published in great britain by harper collins publishers in 2004.so i am pretty sure many of you have read it already.it was also turned into a major film starring hilary swank and gerard butler.
coming back to the novel, to start with, let me tell you friends it will make you love your beloved ones even more;you will start treasuring your life and thank god that you are blessed with having your loved ones around you.the protagonist of the novel Holly Kennedy loses her husband Gerry to brain tumour. completely lost and lonely in the wide world without him inspite of having friends and family she stops living.she stumbles in and out of reality and dreams where she sees, feels her dead husband.she locks herself in their house and doesn't eat or shower or clean her home or search for a job.although her best mates sharon and denise or her family try to support her, she is drained emotionally.at this precise juncture comes letters from her dead husband Gerry one each month.as if Gerry had come back to her life and she started over although with great difficulty.she did as she was told and slowly she found the footholds of life.the loving spirit of Gerry guided her be it singing in a karaoke competition at club diva (she was Gerry's disco diva) or going to a holiday to Lanzarote or just simply buying herself a pretty dress,a table lamp.with Gerry's advice of "shooting for the moon" she landed herself into a good job.at the end it was implied that although Gerry's life was over her's continued and there was a possibility of her being happy in the future.

so basically the story is of hope, courage and determination in the face of great difficulties of life.it is a story of someone as common as us with simple dreams and aspirations.it is a tale of pure love;a tale of true soul mates;a tale of sacrifices, the joys of giving and sharing;a tale of the wonderful bond of family and friends.it reminds us nothing lasts forever.this is Cecilia Ahern's masterpiece,a gift for us all to help us appreciate life in all its fragrances.her writing is lucid yet expresses the most complex emotions masterfully.also the love between siblings and friends, their different shades is portrayed wonderfully.so thats P.S.I Love You for now.do tell me how you like it or if you want to know more about it.in the meantime do grab a copy of this book and read it.trust me with a cosy couch and a mug of coffee you will be in heaven.
see you soon with more other interesting reviews and other stories.........................

The novel is painfully beautiful,it strikes certain chords of your heart leaving you mesmerized. It haunts me.A tale of two brothers written passionately, mingling facts with fiction going far beyond the stereotyping of characters into such a domain that ceaselessly surprises the readers, agonizes  them and makes them contended at the same time. Subhash and Udayan, the brothers are like the two opposite sides of the same coin.........................
